Drinkwater: Big Result

Danny Drinkwater reckons more results like Saturday’s at Sheffield Wednesday will only strengthen City’s credentials as genuine promotion contenders.

Nigel Pearson’s side were in authoritative mood at Hillsborough, as goals from Drinkwater and Ben Marshall lifted the Foxes to third in the npower Championship.

And City’s playmaking midfielder says they will be looking for more of the same at Leeds on Tuesday.

“These types of results are the ones that can take you to success in this league,” Drinkwater said after hitting his first goal of the season in Saturday’s victory.

“If we can go to places like Hillsborough and produce results in key games then it’s going to stand us in good stead.

“Now we move on to Leeds on Tuesday, which is always going to be a big game.

“We want to go there and win, but then I don’t think we’ll go anywhere this season looking for a draw.”

City’s weekend win, in front of nearly 4,000 travelling fans, was made all the more impressive by the way Pearson’s side stood up to the physical challenge presented by Dave Jones’ Owls.

But Drinkwater says combating opposition styles is key part of being successful in the division.

“You have to adapt against every team, that’s the Championship. The games come thick and fast in this division and the styles are different with every game.

“We had a plan before we came out for the game and it worked for us. They didn’t have a single shot of note on target and that was our aim.

“The highlight for me is that we’ve kept two clean sheets in a row, which is a big plus.”

Drinkwater has been one of the Foxes’ most consistent performers this term and is one of only three players – alongside goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and captain Wes Morgan – to have started every one of City’s 18 league games to date.

He puts his excellent displays this season down to one simple factor.

“I just think it’s down to me enjoying my football really.

“The team’s doing well, everyone is playing well and every time we go out there we’re producing good team performances. That’s what will keep us picking up the points.”
