Marshall Aims To Repay The Boss

Ben Marshall credits manager Nigel Pearson for breeding the team spirit driving City’s push for the Premier League.

The Foxes wide-man returned to the starting eleven with a goal and an assist on Saturday, as Pearson’s men climbed to third in the npower Championship with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Pearson spoke with pride post-match of the togetherness his players have shown in recent weeks – a feeling of unity that has led to a run of just two defeats in 13 games.

And Marshall says it is the respect the entire squad share for their manager, and their determination to repay the faith he shows in them, that has kept spirits soaring.

“The manager makes sure he looks after us and if we keep repaying him with results he’ll keep on doing that,” Marshall told Foxes Player.

“A lot of it is down to respect for him. He has been there as a player and played in the Premier League so we all have a lot of respect for him and nobody wants to let him down.

“It helps when you’re winning games 6-0, but I felt from the start of the season that we had a good team spirit and that’s helped us in games where things have been tough.”

Marshall’s weekend recall provided the Salford-born winger with his first Foxes start since the end of September and he took full advantage of the opportunity with a stellar display.

Competition for places in wide areas has been stiff so far this season, with Frenchman Anthony Knockaert and the flying Lloyd Dyer also in top form.

“The manager put faith in me to play against my old club and do well. I thought I did ok and got myself a goal,” said Marshall of Saturday’s game, at a ground where he spent the first half of last season on loan from Stoke City.

“Anthony has done brilliantly, he’s such a creative player that creates chances and scores goals, so it just comes down to who performs at the end of the day.

“I want to be in that right-wing spot and I’ll do all I can to stay there.”
