Kasper: Extra One Per Cent

Kasper Schmeichel says City can be relatively pleased with the first half of their season, but admits they will need to find something extra to stay in promotion contention.

The Foxes sit fifth in the npower Championship table a game over halfway through the campaign, seven points off the automatic promotion places and just one clear of the pack chasing the play-offs.

Despite not picking up as many points as they would have liked in the last six games, City have stayed in touch with the sides above them and head to Burnley on Saturday hoping to close the gap.

And Schmeichel says more displays like that at Hull City on Boxing Day, coupled with a little assistance from Lady Luck, will stand the Foxes in good stead.

“We’ve done ok so far,” said the Danish goalkeeper.

“In the first couple of away games we didn’t get the rub of the green, but I can’t remember too many games where we haven’t performed as we should this season.

“It’s a difficult league because anything can happen, but we’re in the mix and this is the sort of time where we have to start building runs.

“Firstly we need to remain defensively consistent, then produce that extra one per cent which can win a game. The only way to change that is to keep going, because we have been creating plenty of chances.”

With the sharp-shooting Charlie Austin in their ranks, Burnley are likely to provide a difficult test for Nigel Pearson’s men on the road this weekend.

And Schmeichel expects them to still be buoyed by the arrival of a relatively new manager in the shape of Sean Dyche.

“They have a new manager, players will want to prove themselves and show they should be playing,” Kasper said.

“You don’t always know what you’re going to get in this division, but you know that Sean Dyche’s sides will work hard, will press, will work hard defensively and they have a striker in form.

“It will be a hard game but if we play as we have been and put those chances away, we’ll be fine.”
