Wood: Best Debut I've Had

The New Zealand international striker scored twice and was involved in two more during the 6-1 thumping of Huddersfield Town, just hours after becoming a Leicester player following his move from West Bromwich Albion.

It was a dream start to life at King Power Stadium for 21-year-old Wood, who had already hit 11 Championship goals this season while on loan with Millwall.

And even after a string of successful loan spells in the last two-and-a-half years, Wood admits he has never had a better introduction to a new club.

“I think it was the best debut I’ve had,” said the Kiwi forward.

“It’s always nice to get on the score-sheet, but more important that we got the three points.

“I’ve come here to score goals, I’ve done that today and hopefully I can carry on, but the major thing is getting the three points and we’ve done that too.”

His prolific spell in the capital made Wood a marked man in the January transfer window, but City boss Nigel Pearson moved quickly to bring him to King Power Stadium.

And Wood revealed that it was Pearson’s ambition, as well as that of the Club, that convinced him to make the move to the East Midlands.

“When I spoke to the manager, he told me about the Club’s ambition to get to the Premier League this year and that’s where I want to play,” he said.

“I had a good loan spell at Millwall, I think I’ve proved myself in the Championship and wanted to come here, kick on at another level and hopefully work our way into the Premier League.

“He’s a very good manager, he’s been in the game a long time and has a lot of drive and ambition to get the players together, get them ready and make sure we can get there.”
