King: Wood Can Fuel Promotion Push
Wood, signed from West Bromwich Albion on New Year’s Day, hit his third goal in two appearances for City when he opened the scoring on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Burton Albion in the FA Cup.
It has been a spectacular start to life at King Power Stadium for the New Zealand international striker, who also hit two in the 6-1 win over Huddersfield last week to add to the 11 he scored on loan at Millwall this term.
"You can see he has an eye for goal and has scored early in his first two games,” King said of his new team mate.
“You look at his tally for the season and he is up there with the top scorers in the league.
"He has scored a lot of goals this season and if he can keep that going for us, it will give us a big boost.
"He links the play well but also works hard, which everyone at this club does.
"I think that gives us all a lift when you have strikers pressing defenders. It gives the team the emphasis to go on and do that as well."
Wood’s early opener followed by Ritchie De Laet’s second goal in a week ensured there would be no repeat of Burton’s shock victory at King Power Stadium in the League Cup earlier this season.
And King admitted it was nice to put one of the season’s more forgettable results right at the weekend.
"Everyone remembers that game as one of our worst performances of the season. They had four shots on goal, scored all of them and their ‘keeper had a great day.
“But, most of all, it was about getting through to the next round and I think we did that professionally. We showed really good quality and deserved to go through.”
City will travel to Huddersfield Town in round four of the FA Cup with Budweiser, with the tie due to take place the weekend of 26/27 January.
