Barnes, who scored his maiden goal for the Tykes during a 3-0 success over Sunderland before the international break, started for Paul Heckingbottom’s side at Oakwell.

The Club’s 16/17 Development Squad Player of the Season, who scored five goals on loan at Sky Bet League 1 outfit MK Dons last term, has been a hit in south Yorkshire this season.

After Barnsley’s Adam Jackson cancelled out Jonny Russell’s opener in the 18th minute, 19-year-old Barnes rattled the crossbar with a thunderous drive from 30 yards.

It looked to have cost the hosts just before the break when Mason Bennett restored the Rams’ advantage. Tom Bradshaw’s strike in the 73rd minute, however, restored parity on the scoresheet.

With two minutes to go, Bradshaw’s effort was added to by a last-gasp Adam Hammill goal to see Heckingbottom’s side through into the next round.

For Barnes, who got two assists on the night, and his team-mates, an exciting Round 3 trip to face Spurs at Wembley now awaits on Tuesday evening (8pm kick-off).

Elsewhere, defender Callum Elder was a late substitute for Wigan Athletic in a 3-0 success over Charlton Athletic at The Valley, a result which propels them up to sixth in League 1.

Two goals from Gavin Massey and another from Sam Morsy sealed the points for the Latics before Elder emerged from the bench in the second minute of added time.
