Harry Kane's 57th minute spot-kick appeared to send the Three Lions on their way to a last-eight clash with Sweden, but Colombia's Yerry Mina headed in with seconds to spare, sending the tie to extra-time.

Leicester City's Maguire started at Otkrytiye Arena while Vardy was introduced in the 88th minute, replacing Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, ahead of a climactic passage of play.

Maguire has been highly impressive for England this summer.

While neither side were able to win it in extra-time, more drama was to come in the shootout with England trailing 3-2 at one point after Jordan Henderson's effort was saved by David Ospina.

But Mateus Uribe, up next for Colombia, smashed his kick on to the crossbar, before Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, either side of decisive efforts from Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier.

It is a result which sets up a quarter-finals tie against Sweden on Saturday (3pm BST kick-off) with the victors going on to face either hosts Russia or Croatia in the last-four.

Following Japan's exit on Monday, where Shinji Okazaki was an unused substitute in their 3-2 defeat by Belgium, Maguire and Vardy are now City's last remaining representatives in Russia.
