Maddison: We Caused Liverpool Problems

Talented attacking midfielder James Maddison believes Leicester City acquitted themselves extremely well against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

While strikes from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino handed the Reds a two-goal advantage at the interval, the scoreline did not accurately reflect City’s first-half performance.

In the second period, Claude Puel’s men rallied and pulled a goal back through Rachid Ghezzal, but they couldn’t quite find a leveller at an electric King Power Stadium.

“We’ve come away with nothing but there’s a lot of positives to take,” Maddison told LCFC TV. “Once we’ve reflected on the game, we’ll look back and we tested Liverpool and dominated for large spells of the game especially in the second half of the game.

“The equaliser wasn’t to be but we gave ourselves a lot to do going in 2-0 down at half time. There’s a good feel about the Club at the minute. We’ve had some good performances and got six points on the board. I think that’s okay and something to build on.”

Maddison himself had gone close to finding the back of net after the break, only to be denied by a fine last-ditch challenge from Joe Gomez.

“We knew we could cause Liverpool problems,” he continued. “We have a great squad here. A great young, athletic squad with lots of different options.

“I’m sure when I watch the game back it’ll tell the same story that I feel right now. It’s disappointment. Even though Liverpool are now four [wins] from four, we matched them and more possibly today but we gave ourselves too much to do going 2-0 down.

“That’s what we’ve got to work on, not giving ourselves a mountain to climb. When you go 2-0 down to a side like Liverpool it’s always going to be tough but like I said we’ll take the positives going into the international break and hopefully we can kick on.”

I loved it out there, I love playing football. Maybe in previous games I haven’t been on the ball as much as I’d like to. I’m a player that always like to be on the ball.

Maddison was awarded with the Premier League’s Man of the Match award after another impressive showing against a top side.

He added: “I loved it out there, I love playing football. Maybe in previous games I haven’t been on the ball as much as I’d like to. I’m a player that always like to be on the ball.

“I found a lot of the ball in between the lines today and got joy from that. I enjoyed it but it’s so hard to talk about your personal performance when you don’t win the game because you want to win, it’s a team game and I’m really disappointed with the result.”
