Schmeichel, 31, was ever-present for Denmark during their run to the FIFA World Cup Last-16 this summer, saving 91 per cent of shots faced - more than any player who featured more than once.

The Foxes 'keeper, who recently agreed a new five-year contract at King Power Stadium, also made headlines around the world, saving three penalties against Croatia in the knockout stage.

Over the past calendar year, meanwhile, Schmeichel set a new unbeaten streak record for Denmark, not conceding for 572 minutes across World Cup, qualifying and friendly fixtures.

Schmeichel's wonderful performance against Croatia could not prevent Denmark's exit.

Schmeichel is alongside France's World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris and Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, who kept two clean sheets against England in Russia this summer.

All three candidates were selected for their exploits between 3 July 2017 and 15 July 2018 and have been nominated by a team of nine FIFA legends.

The award winners - including categories for Men's Player, Women's Player, Men's Coach and Women's Coach - will be announced later this month, streamed live on FIFA's official website.
