In Diamniadio, Mendy was named in the starting XI for continental champions Senegal, who left it late to beat Rwanda 1-0 in their second game of the group phase. The success was a tense one and confirmed only thanks to a 98th-minute penalty from Liverpool's Sadio Mané.
