- LCFC Women beat Liverpool 4-0 in the Barclays Women’s Super League- The win lifts City off bottom spot in the table- Josie Green, Carrie Jones, Ashleigh Plumptre and Missy Goodwin netted at King Power Stadium- City travel to Meadow Park to face Arsenal on Friday 5 May (7:30pm BST kick-off)
On Saturday afternoon at King Power Stadium, the Foxes recorded their fourth Barclays Women’s Super League win of the season after putting four past Liverpool, and the manager was keen to praise the Foxes’ ability on an important matchday in their bid for survival.
“I think the players were outstanding from start to finish,” Kirk stated. “That's back-to-back games here that we’ve won now. Obviously, with the Reading game, I thought the players were excellent and probably never quite got the scoreline they deserved, but we certainly got the three points that day.
“And today I thought we were excellent. I think we started right at it in terms of never giving Liverpool a chance to get into the game. And we maintained that for most of the 90 minutes.
“There's elements of the performance that we we're unhappy with, where we think we were a little bit sloppy. We could have been a little bit more ruthless in front of goal, especially in the first half. I think it shows you how far we've come when we look at a 4-0 victory and we find areas to improve on.”
The Foxes were also victorious in the reverse fixture at Prenton Park in February when Hannah Cain swept home a corner routine eight minutes in to lead City to a 1-0 win.
During Saturday’s win over the Reds, there were clever set-piece routines on display, and while they didn’t lead to any goals, the 44-year-old explains how it is an area of their game that they have been working on.
“It's the goalkeeper coach (that's responsible for the set-pieces),” the former Everton manager continued. “We've got a 'keeper coach that puts them into place and it's the players that implement them, and I think a large part of it is confidence. I think it's about practising on the training ground, which helps.
“But I think it's about having the players feeling confident to go and do it as well, because some of the set-piece routines are not actually easy. They've got to be precise, and I thought we'd actually got one in the first few minutes!
“We would have loved that because it was quite a complicated one. But, I think the goalkeeper coach and the players have to take the credit for that.”
The first two goals, both coming in the first half – a 15th-minute strike from Josie Green and a 21st-minute effort from Carrie Jones – both took a deflection on their way through to finding the back of the Liverpool net, but the manager believes that it is about time that Leicester had their fair share of luck.
He added: “Any breaks that go away are deserved. I remember we played West Ham United, I think it was my second game and I thought we were the much better side. Nothing went our way that day and we lost 1-0 in 90th minute.
“I think the players were feeling a little bit sorry for themselves after that and we said to them that if you keep doing the hard work, you'll get the little breaks and we're now getting those breaks, which are deserved because nobody can fault the players' work rate.”
