The Super Eagles beat Burundi and Guinea in the group stages to set up a round of 16 tie against Les Lions, and took the lead on 19 minutes through former Watford striker Odion Oghalo.

However, shortly before the interval, Cameroon turned the game on its head after Stephane Bahoken and Clinton N'Jie both found the target in the space of four minutes.

Determined to build on their three AFCON titles – the last of which came in 2013 – Nigeria hauled themselves level on 63 minutes through Ighalo, before Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi sealed a 3-2 victory with an effort three minutes later.

Nigeria will face the winner of Egypt versus South Africa in the quarter-finals in Cairo on Wednesday 10 July.

Following the success for Ndidi’s Nigeria, City striker Islam Slimani will attempt to help Algeria qualify for the last eight when his nation take on Guinea in Cairo on Monday.
