While the Foxes have already tasted success over the Hornets this season, sealing a 2-0 victory at King Power Stadium, the Hertfordshire club have sealed several impressive results lately.

Overseen by former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson, Watford won four out of six following his appointment before Christmas, while also defeating Liverpool 3-0 at home in February.

Defender Matt Elliott is congratulated by his Foxes colleagues after levelling the scores.

Matt Elliott and Brian Deane struck for Leicester City to end the calendar year of 2002 with a victory over Watford as their bid to win automatic promotion to the Premier League continued.

The Foxes went into the Vicarage Road clash on the back of a frustrating defeat by Ipswich Town on Filbert Way, which was only their second loss at their new home ground in the 2002/03 season.

Micky Adams' men were behind early on in Hertfordshire, too, as Jermaine Pennant found Heiðar Helguson, who was able to evade his man in the penalty area and convert past Ian Walker.

Turkey international Muzzy Izzet laid up Brian Deane's winner at Vicarage Road.

Leicester, though, did not suffer consecutive defeats once across the entire promotion-winning campaign and were back on level terms five minutes later, with Elliott netting from close range for City.

A tight affair was settled six minutes after the hour-mark, meanwhile, when the reliable Deane got on the end of Muzzy Izzet's corner to make it 2-1 and keep the Foxes in the promotion picture.

Adams' men would eventually succeed in securing an instant return to the Premier League as runners-up in the second tier standings, below champions Portsmouth, managed by Harry Redknapp.

City: Walker, Impey, Elliott, Heath, Rogers, Stewart (Summerbee 61'), McKinlay (Davidson 61'), Izzet, Scowcroft, Deane, Dickov (Benjamin 83')

Subs not used: Flowers, Lewis

Goals: Elliott 34', Deane 66'
