A Good Start, Says Rodgers

Leicester City have made a good start to their 2020/21 season, but still have plenty of work to do, says manager Brendan Rodgers following a 2-1 Premier League win at Newcastle United.

The Foxes moved up to third in the division after a clinical performance at St. James’ Park saw James Maddison and Youri Tielemans find the net in the second period.

There will now be a 13-day break in Premier League action for City, who in their next outing head to bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round on Saturday 9 January (3pm GMT kick-off).

When asked about his verdict on his side’s season so far, Rodgers insisted that while he has been pleased with their efforts, there’s still a great deal of hard work to follow.

“It’s been a really good start,” Rodgers told LCFC TV. “We’re nearly at the halfway point, but still there’s so much work to do.

“We want to have a run in all of the cup competitions we’re in. Now, the FA Cup starts, it’s a tough game away to Michael’s [O’Neill] Stoke, but we’ll be ready for that.

“We can prepare now in the week and get ready for that next Saturday.”

In the 2-1 win at Newcastle, Rodgers was thrilled to be able to welcome back Turkey international Çağlar Söyüncü, who had missed City’s last seven matches in all competitions with an adductor issue.

“This was important for us,” he said of the City No.4. “He’s a top-class player and he’s been out for quite a while now.

“So, to have him back just to give us that extra insurance going into the last 10 minutes was key.”
