The LEGO Discover programme has seen children at Brocks Hill Primary School excel with their language development and interpersonal skills.

Working in partnership with The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Leicester City in the Community has run the LEGO Discover programme at four Lionheart Academy Trust primary school throughout Leicester.

The first season of the STEM programme is called Playmakers, which involves four to six-year-olds designing new spaces that can help people to get fit, active and healthy.

Participants at Oadby-based Brocks Hill include EAL (English as an Additional Language) children, to showcase the programme’s inclusivity, as Leicester City in the Community STEM Coordinator, Dr Alex Evans explains.

“We have an especially big focus on accessibility and making those spaces open to everyone,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you are in a wheelchair, young or old.

Pupils at Brocks Hill Primary School are amongst those taking part in the programme.

“Over the weeks we have seen the children start to work together to share ideas. At the end, they communicated those ideas to each other really well.

Kate Taylor, Year 1 Class Teacher at Brocks Hill Primary School, commented on how the sessions have benefitted the children that take part.

“They’re really working on those collaborative skills working alongside each other,” she added. “As well as those listening skills. The fact that they are enjoying it is so vital in ensuring their wellbeing.

“It is something the children look forward to every single week and we are really grateful to Dr Alex and the LEGO Discover programme.”

The LEGO Discover programme has been running for eight weeks and the children have been building obstacle courses, bridges and parks. See the programme in action, HERE
