The former Foxes centre-back was on commentary duty for LCFC Radio at King Power Stadium as a Ché Adams brace overturned James Maddison's superb opening free-kick. It was another frustrating outing for City, who have collected a solitary point from three Premier League outings.

On Tuesday, Leicester head to Edgeley Park to take on Sky Bet League 2 outfit Stockport County (7:45pm BST kick-off). Taggart, who won the League Cup with the Club in 2000, expects manager Brendan Rodgers to make changes to his XI in the build up to Chelsea away next weekend.

"It's a game where he'll probably make a raft of changes to prepare for the Chelsea game," he said live. "You don't need me to say it, that's become a massive priority. He needs to find something within the squad for me, with the way the second half panned out. There was a lack of something, or a few things.

They were two goals which were preventable, you have to say. Losing a game of a football which you led in is probably the most disappointing thing.

"There's some soul searching for them this week. It was disappointing after going 1-0 up and looking good in the first half. After going that goal up, they decided to sit back. Leicester, really, let Southampton come right into the game. Once Southampton got a foothold, they didn't let go of it.

"You've got to give them credit. They put Leicester under pressure. Leicester didn't get close enough to them. In that second half, they didn't put them under enough pressure. There wasn't enough challenges. They weren't physical enough. Southampton were relentless in their hunt to get the ball back.

"They were two goals which were preventable, you have to say. Losing a game of a football which you led in is probably the most disappointing thing."

Goals – City Beaten By Southampton

Taggart also reserved praise for the quality of Maddison's free-kick on Filbert Way, the England midfielder's second goal of the season, which put the Foxes ahead.

"It was a fantastic strike," he added. "A bit of magic from James Maddison. I think everyone in the ground thought he was going for that far post, including the Southampton goalkeeper. He had to be absolutely pin-point perfect with that execution and he was.

"He got it in down at the 'keeper's near post. The whip he's got on the ball, to get it round the outside of the wall, and then to come in at the near post... that is top level."
