Primary School Children Unite Against Bullying

Leicester City in the Community’s Premier League Primary Stars team have been making primary school children across the city aware of bullying and how to deal with it.

- Leicester City in the Community invited four primary schools to take part in empowering Anti-Bullying Week activities
- Activities included ‘catching compliments and carpet of kindness'
- Anti-Bullying Week takes place this week (14-18 November)
- The event was inspired by this year’s theme ‘reach out’, which will encourage children to call out bullying

Children from four Premier League partner schools have been empowered to call out bullying in school, following an anti-bullying themed event at King Power Stadium's Community Hub.

Glenfield, Sparkenhoe, Stokes Wood and St. Mary’s Fields Primary Schools descended upon Filbert Way to take part in feel-good activities designed to help children gain respect for each other – as well as learning what bullying is and what to do when they see it.

Activities featured games called catching compliments and carpet of kindness, which saw children say compliments about somebody who threw a bean bag to them and write a series of compliments about their peers, before popping an array of sticky notes together to form a ‘carpet’.

Sean O’Brien, Primary Stars Coach at Leicester City’s charitable arm discussed the importance of Anti-Bullying Week: “It is important to educate children what bullying actually is. They might not understand what bullying is.

“Anti-Bullying Week has a massive impact; one word that was used during the carpet compliment exercise was the words ‘role model’, so seeing someone of stature in society telling people not to bully will encourage exactly that.

“Hopefully they work together and reach out, who they need to reach out to if they are or they see someone else being bullied.”

Anti-Bullying Week takes place every year and intends to raise awareness of the issue of bullying among children, especially in schools. This year’s theme is ‘reach out’, which will aim to encourage children to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

This is exactly what Tristan, a Year 4 pupil at Stokes Wood Primary School, says they will do following what he learned at King Power Stadium.

“Today, we have been saying nice things to each other,” Tristan said. “I will now tell a teacher and I would help whoever is getting bullied feel better. Anytime we know that someone is getting bullied, we will now know what to do.”
