Akgün broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, having had a goal ruled out by VAR in the first half, to set Turkey on their way to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Latvia which confirms the Crescent Stars' place at the 2024 European Championships.
The 23-year-old winger, on loan at Leicester City from Galatasaray, played 77 minutes of the contest at Torku Arena before being replaced by Yusuf Sari.
Former Everton striker Cenk Tosun then came off the bench to net a brace, either side of Kerem Aktürkoglu's late third, which keeps Vincenzo Montella's men top of Group D, six points ahead of Wales.
Danny Ward
Danny Ward was in fine form for Wales this week.
Rob Page's side were also in action on Sunday evening and secured a vital 2-1 success over Croatia, with Foxes 'keeper Ward once again playing 90 minutes for his country.
Following Harry Wilson's second-half double, which put the Dragons in a commanding position, Mario Pašalić halved the deficit with a goal 15 minutes from time.
The hosts managed to see the game out at Cardiff City Stadium, leapfrogging Croatia into second place and on course to qualify with two matches remaining.
