‘Looking To Put Things Right’ – Foster Previews Brighton

This Sunday afternoon (3pm GMT kick-off) sees the Foxes welcome Brighton for Barclays Women’s Super League action.

Looking to return to winning ways after a frustrating defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last time out, here are the main talking points from the press conference at Belvoir Drive…

Important games coming up

City were narrowly beaten by Spurs last weekend.

Leicester have a lot of important games coming up, against teams in a similar position in the WSL standings as them, such as Brighton this weekend followed by a trip to Aston Villa.

Foster explains how each game is taken seriously, with the same level of intensity required to take the points to climb the table.

“Every game is important to us,” the Assistant Manager stated. “And we saw Sunday as a missed opportunity and we’re looking to put things right this weekend.

“Ambition of achieving a high finish in the league and doing well in the Adobe Women's FA Cup is still exactly the same and that’s where our preparation is at. Every game is important for us, and we always go out with the ambition of getting maximum points.

“Reaching that top six is still the ambition that we have as a Club, providing we execute what we can, so without a doubt, that’s the same target for us.”

Brighton arrive in the East Midlands with two fewer points in the WSL, and without a win since the start of the month, losing 4-1 to Manchester City last time out.

The Assistant Manager does, however, understand the quality the team possesses, such as the league’s third top goalscorer Elisabeth Terland and sees similarities between the Seagulls and Spurs.

“I think they play similar to Tottenham in many elements,” Foster continued. “We know the threat they pose on the transitions so we’re expecting that.

“But hopefully we’ll be able to have more of the ball and cause problems. Like we said before, we’re aware of the danger they’ll bring, and we’ll be ready for that.”

Learning from the reverse fixture

The scores ended 2-2 when the two sides met at Broadfield Stadium.

In the reverse fixture, back in December, City took a two-goal lead with strikes from Lena Petermann and Jutta Rantala either side of the break but failed to hang on to the three points following two late strikes from Terland.

Foster went on to talk about the team’s progress since that day, and how the winter transfer window, along with time to adapt, has led to a more well-rounded squad that are ready for the rematch.

She added: “We’ve added players in January which have strengthened our squad in the right areas. Defensively we’ve also got a lot better.

“There are still elements we know we need to work on, but I think we’ve tightened up on those transition moments, so there’s things to take away from our last game against Brighton, and hopefully if we find ourselves in a winning position, we’ll be able to sustain that.”
