Physical Test Pleases Eaden

Development Squad coach Nicky Eaden says his side’s recent physical test against Warrington Town will be something the team will have to deal with week in, week out in the fast approaching season.
The Under-21s took an early lead in their final pre-season fixture through Joe Dodoo but let in three swift goals as the hosts took control of the first half.

But they recovered from the deficit and tied the game up at 3-3 against a tough Warrington side thanks to goals from Kieran Kennedy and Ryan Watson.

Speaking after the Warrington game to LCFC.com, Eaden said: “There were far too many goals, especially against us – I thought we set off well, went a goal up, missed another decent chance and then I don’t know whether a bit of complacency slipped in – that’s why we play these games.

“We were playing against proper men and of course with a lot of U21 games you get a lot of 18 and 19-year-olds – they were physical but that’s something our lads will have to deal with. They’ve got to get used to it and they’ve got to get used to playing against men.”

But Eaden, an experienced former full-back with a career behind him which stretches from Barnsley to Kettering Town, believes that no matter what pre-season throws at you, it counts for nothing.

He added: “I never look too deep into pre-season because I have gone through that many myself as a player – you have a great pre-seasons then you set off poorly and you have a really bad pre-season but something just clicks.

“We’ve done well against the lower teams, the likes of Corby and we had another 4-0 win, but as soon as we played Scunthorpe’s first team, which we knew was always going to be a big ask for them and against Leeds, we had a couple of setbacks.”

The youngsters begin their campaign in the revamped Barclays U21 Premier League with a tough test against Everton at Southport FC on Monday evening.
