U21 Report: Leicester City 1 Leeds United 2

Leicester City’s Development Squad suffered their first defeat in five games after losing 2-1 to Leeds United in the U21 Premier League Cup at Nuneaton Town’s James Parnell Stadium on Tuesday.

The young Foxes took the lead through St. Kitts and Nevis international Harry Panayiotou but a double from Luke Parkin, which included the winner two minutes from time, handed Leeds the victory.
Steve Beaglehole’s men were looking for a fifth win on the bounce in all competitions, most recently beating Benfica 2-0 at King Power Stadium to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Premier League International Cup.
Both Ben Hamer and Matthew Upson started the game while forward Simonas Stankevicius, currently on loan at Nuneaton, began the game upfront for the Foxes.
Panayiotou carved out the first opportunity of the match with two minutes gone, lifting his shot over the bar from 12 yards.
The windy and wet conditions caused havoc from set-plays as Jack Barmby was forced to clear a curling Leeds corner away on seven minutes.
Callum Elder then burst down the left wing a minute later and delivered a pin-point cross to captain Tom Hopper, who nodded over from six yards.
At the other end, Hamer pulled off a fine save, tipping wide opposition captain Alex Purver’s long-range effort.
Stankevicius then picked up the ball 40 yards from goal and burst through the centre of midfield, eventually firing a goal-bound strike that was blocked by the Leeds defence mid-way through the first half.
Hopper then beat the offside trap and collected Barmby’s neat through-ball, but after latching onto the pass well, the frontman fired just wide on the half-hour mark.
Barmby, again looking lively down the left, then fizzed a ball across the face of the Leeds goal which managed to avoid both Stankevicius and Hopper as City pushed for the opener.
Leeds threatened on the counter-attack, and came inches away from breaking the deadlock as Brian Montenegro’s first-time shot struck Hamer’s post approaching half-time – goalless at the break.
The Foxes started the second half well. McCourt delivered a superb ball into Stankevicius, who forced Eric Grimes into a fine point-blank save on 47 minutes.
City took the lead on the hour mark. Leeds couldn’t clear Barmby’s corner and Panayiotou stabbed in the loose ball from three yards.
Hamer again kept Leeds out on 64 minutes, tipping Chris Dawson’s strike from the edge of the box wide of his post to keep City in front.
Leicester’s lead only lasted nine minutes. Hitting City on the break, Charlie Taylor squared the ball to Parkin, who slotted past Hamer to level for his side.
Barmby then tried his luck from 25 yards with a free kick, but his effort went just over the Leeds crossbar with 13 minutes to play.
Panayiotou looked to restore his side’s lead five minutes from time – his shot blocked by Zac Thompson deep in the opposition box.
But Leeds pushed for a winner and found one with just two minutes to go. A low cross from Dawson found Parkin, who tapped in to seal to win for the Yorkshire club.
The Development Squad face Southampton in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Monday again at the James Parnell Stadium.
