Leicester City’s Development Squad were beaten by a ruthless Tottenham Hotspur side in the Barclays U21 Premier League at King Power Stadium on Friday evening.

Winger Emmanuel Sonupe opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark after beating Ben Hamer, who played 90 minutes alongside fellow first teamer Liam Moore, from range with a deflected strike.

The Foxes responded well as Joe Dodoo went close with a low drive that Tottenham ‘keeper Tom Glover did well to palm away.

But Shayon Harrison doubled the Spurs lead in the second period, before a superb strike from substitute Cy Goddard rounded off the scoring at King Power Stadium in stoppage time.

City headed into the fixture having won three of their last four U21 Premier League games, while Spurs hadn’t won in the league since the end of November.

But the visiting side were positive from the off as Elliott Moore had to twice be on hand to block strikes from Harrison and Nabil Bentaleb.

And Spurs made their early dominance count as Sonupe rattled in a deflected effort from the edge of the box on 15 minutes to give his side the lead.

The Foxes responded well as Dodoo latched onto Jacob Blyth’s flick-on before forcing Glover into a good low save. Harvey Barnes looked like he would turn the rebound in, but he was dispossessed at the last minute.

Skipper Blyth then saw his 20-yard effort deflect behind off Anton Walkes. The resulting corner was nodded down by England youth international Darnell Johnson to Admiral Muskwe, who couldn’t quite get his shot off from close range.

Hamer was then on hand to make three saves in quick succession, denying Will Miller on two occasions, before holding onto Kazaiah Sterling’s deflected long-range drive on the stroke of half-time.

Despite a good start to the second period, the Foxes went 2-0 down on 52 minutes as Harrison converted at the front post.

City looked for a way back into the game as Blyth first nodded into the hands of Glover, before substitute Danny Rowe dragged an effort across the face of goal under pressure on the hour mark.

Hamer then collected a long-range effort from Kyle Walker-Peters, before holding Miller’s shot well shortly after.

Blyth attempted to halve the deficit on 73 minutes, but rifled his effort over the bar, while the lively Rowe saw his strike saved by Glover after cutting inside from the right flank just moments later.

With six minutes to play, captain Blyth sent a low drive off target from 25 yards, but the points were eventually wrapped up in style by Spurs in injury time.

Anthony Georgiou delivered from the left and his cross fell kindly to Goddard, who hammered the ball into the top left corner with a sublime strike – an action that brought the game to an end.

The Foxes return to King Power Stadium on Monday 4 April, when they host Liverpool in the U21 Premier League (7pm kick-off).
