Leicester City’s Development Squad were beaten 2-0 in the Barclays U21 Premier League by a talented Liverpool outfit at King Power Stadium on Monday evening.

In an encounter that saw few goalscoring opportunities, it was City defender Elliott Moore who came closest to putting his side in front, as his header was cleared off the line in the first period.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Liverpool emerged from the break with real intent and went 1-0 up through centre back Lloyd Jones.

And while midfielder Harvey Barnes came close to hauling the Foxes level shortly after, the Merseyside outfit doubled their lead through forward Jerome Sinclair on 82 minutes.

It was a tight opening affair at King Power Stadium, with Ryan Kent curling a 25-yard free kick wide on 12 minutes, before Michael Cain fired off target after winning the ball well in midfield.

Liverpool then had a huge opportunity to open the scoring, but striker Sinclair side-footed wide from inside the six-yard box with 22 minutes gone.

Just two minutes later, City were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves, as Elliott Moore’s powerful header was cleared off the line.

Foxes stopper Daniel Iversen, who saw action for Denmark’s Under-19s over the international break, then made an excellent stop to deny Sinclair as the game began to open up.

Sheyi Ojo was next to threaten as he fired over from six yards, while City skipper Ryan Watson put in a fine challenge to block Cameron Brannagan’s goal-bound strike.

Ojo looked lively on the right flank and carved out another opportunity just before the break, but after cutting inside, he couldn’t direct his effort on target – goalless at half-time.

Liverpool started the second half with real intent as Kent saw his low strike blocked by Elliott Moore, before skipper Watson fired over at the other end.

But the visitors maintained their attacking intent and eventually broke the deadlock on 68 minutes, as defender Jones converted at the far post.

Substitute Barnes then forced Bodgan into a low save four minutes later as the Foxes looked for a way back into the game.

But despite City’s efforts, Liverpool eventually doubled their lead with eight minutes to play.

Sinclair picked up the ball to the left of goal and unleashed a powerful effort that flew past Iversen and into the back of the net.

That wrapped up the victory for Liverpool, who now move up to seventh in the U21 Premier League table, while Leicester, who next take on Norwich on Monday 11 April (2pm kick-off), remain 10th.
