Schmeichel Praises Team Spirit

City 'keeper Kasper Schmeichel has pointed to the team spirit in the Leicester City squad as a key reason behind the team’s current five-match winning streak.

Thursday night’s 2-1 win over Wolves at King Power Stadium kept the Foxes in second position and ensured that the promotion push stayed on track.

But the 26-year-old Dane conceded that there was a time when the side might not have been able to display the spirit that helped see them secure the three points courtesy of a typically classy finish from David Nugent 15 minutes from time.

“We stuck at it and maybe previously in the last season we probably wouldn’t have got the win, but that’s just a testament to the quality and attitude that we’ve got now,” said Schmeichel.

“It’s both the team spirit and the attitude of the players. They say losing becomes a habit, but so does winning, and we’re doing that a lot at the moment and we’ve got to keep going.

“I’ve been saying it all along that individually we’ve an unbelievable team. The players in front of me are all top class and all bring something different to the team.

“We’ve got a good variation and good balance in the team and Nuge in the last couple of games has come up with the winner, and that’s what we need, everybody to chip in.”

The upturn in the fortunes of the team have coincided with some impressive individual displays from City’s No 1, who is set to make his international bow for Denmark against Macedonia in Skopje on Wednesday night.

The former Leeds United man was keen to stress the importance of defending and performing as a team however, adding: “I’m there to provide stability for the team, and making saves is great, but that’s not the nuts and bolts of goalkeeping.

“Every keeper can make saves; it’s about the communication, the positioning and whether you can take pressure off the defence to guide them to where you want them to be so you don’t have to make saves.

“That is the difficult part and at the moment we’re communicating very well at the back.

“Things are going well and when you’ve got defenders like Michael Keane and Wes Morgan in front of you, you’ve already got a very good start.”
