Maguire Thrilled With England Call-Up

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire speaks to the media ahead of England's friendlies against Holland and Italy.

“Yes I would say so,” the 25-year-old said, addressing the national media on Tuesday afternoon. “Obviously last year I broke into the Hull side and played in the Premier League.

“I felt like I held my own last year but I have stepped on. Thanks to all the staff at Leicester and Gareth for having faith in me. Learning off great players around me has improved my game all around.”

Maguire’s inclusion could see him earn his fourth and fifth caps over the coming fortnight and the City defender says it is always a confidence boost to be selected for his country.

I’ve been here for the past few camps, I’m getting used to the surroundings, the staff, the players and it’s a special moment every time I get the call.

“There are a lot of good players, they have played a lot of games for England, there’s a reason why they’ve done that," he added.

“They’ve had good experience so, like you say, it gives me great confidence that Gareth wants me, trusts me and wants me to be playing with the other players he’s selected as well.

“Fingers crossed that it carries on. Every time I get the call it’s a special moment – a moment I’m really proud of.

“That Thursday when the squad gets announced, I’m sat by my phone waiting for the text and it’s a special moment when it comes through.

“I’ve been here for the past few camps, I’m getting used to the surroundings, the staff, the players and it’s a special moment every time I get the call.”
